Creative Intelligence

Joe N. Toliver and Keyon Dooling

Creative intelligence is recognized as an important skill in all facets of life. In the business world, creative intelligence – also called innovation — is one of the most sought after innate and developed skill-sets.

Organizations that focus on the high-level conceptual thinking and problem solving practices leads to the development of innovation and creativity, which is highly valued and desired in our globalised economy. Critical and creative thinking, invention, complexity, innovation, are all components of the creative intelligence competencies accelerating in progressive businesses.

If everyone at an organization thinks the same, innovative breakthroughs are unlikely. When people are empowered, they are ten times more likely to use creative thinking, but only if an organization’s culture is permitting. For example, Google who models the idea of creative intelligent workplaces is a leader in innovation. Google’s famous 80/20 rule allows employees to spend 20 percent of their time working on creative ideas.

Blueprint for Success

Joe N. Toliver and Keyon Dooling

“Blueprint for Success” is the implementation of a three-pronged approach to social skill development for youth and adult athletes. The program model focuses on developing social skills, character building and behavioral modification. The goal of the program is to improve the health and wellness outcomes of youth athletes. These three approaches include Individualized Wellness Coaching, Team Health Education and Peer Coaching. KD’s Blueprint for Success is an important tool in reaching mental health and wellness outcomes.

Individualized Wellness Coaching: The “Coaching” concept is an alternative approach to the traditional therapeutic model for healthcare and social services. Professional athletes often have negative perceptions around therapy, counseling and treatment.

Team Health Education: Implementing a series of fun and engaging mental wellness workshops that address a variety of “root” issues prevalent to athletes. The events would be activity-based utilizing real world examples (i.e. managing the emotions associated with an injury or managing family challenges), role playing and examples to assist in developing the skills necessary to overcome both personal and professional adversities in life.

Peer Coach: Train a cadre of participants, who will provide outreach and support - placing them in the role of “Peer Coach”. Peer coaching is based on the reality that many people make changes not only based on what they know, but on the opinions and actions of their close, trusted peers. A Peer Coach can communicate and understand in a way that the bestintentioned “outsiders” can't and can serve as role models for change. Peer Coaches are typically the same age or slightly older than the individual with whom they are working. The role of a Peer Coach is to assist in raising awareness, provide accurate information and assist peers in developing skills to change behavior.
